Oil Sands Coring

Oil Sands Coring

Walking Muskeg at Fort McMurray

This rig was designed and built specifically to wireline core oil sands in Canada. We built a fleet of these units complete with twin duplex mud pumps on board.  We then designed a low rotation 3″ coring system (<150 RPM) that used high volume, low pressure circulation.  Core was cut into a PVC liner, sealed and frozen for lab testing.  The top drive rigs allowed high production rates and coring of up to 600 feet in a shift.  Recovery with this method limited the intrusion of the fluids into the core and maximized the core recovery.  We conducted the initial trial on this system in the early 80’s.  It has since become the standardized coring system for the industry. Success with this system and development of this technology allowed us to complete projects of up to 3,000 wells for a single client.
